URBOND

Another win and a defeat for UVC: More still to be done according to Coach Wens.

With the festive season coming to an end, the boys of Coach Wens wasted no time in getting back into action for their 5th National Volleyball League fixtures in Dartford, Kent.

The opponents for this triangular fixture were Guildford International VC and Dartford Mens VC who were on position 6th and 9th on the NVL M3S league table prior to this fixture. URBOND VC was on position 7th making this a very tough fixture on paper.

The first game saw Guildford International beating the host Dartford VC by 3 – 1 sets.

The second game of the fixture was Guildford VC vs URBOND VC and the Guildford team did not waste time in taking the lead with 25 – 15 win in Set 1. With the URBOND VC players now warmed up, Sets 2 and 3 seemed an easy ride for the team with good combinations play and hits in the middle by setter Samir B. and his middle hitters Wens F. and Hans S. The team won both sets 25 – 20 and 25 – 15 respectively. The Guildford players not willing to accept defeat set up a very good defence base to counter the attacks from outside hitters Kamel B. Akram M. and Festus N. With scores levelled at 20 – 20 all in Set 4, a poor refereeing decision then turned the tides in favour of the Guildford team who then took advantage of a slightly disorganised URBOND camp and won the set 25 – 23 thus triggering a tie-break. The Guildford players now determined than ever improved on their attacks and powered their way through the tie-break set, winning it 15 – 9, and winning the game 3 – 2 sets.

The final game of this fixture saw host Dartford VC against URBOND VC. Coach Wens made few changes on his team line up by introducing middle hitter Nasim K. and new signing Sam Sawacki into the starting six. The game did not start well for the team as the second setter, Festus N. picked up a cramp injury that saw him limped off the court. Setter Samir was then brought back in to replace him and he wasted no time in getting the team back into attack mode. URBOND went on the offensive and won all 3 sets with scores 27 – 25, 25 – 13 and 27-25 respectively.

Not a bad away trip for the boys of Coach Wens and after the game, the MVP for both games Hans S. said, ‘On paper the fixture was a tough one but I’m happy the lads could take 4 points from the 6 points. In all it was a good performance from the team and it was good to see Kamel B. back from injury and on court again giving us the best first balls’.

Coach Wens speaking after the games said, ‘More still needs to be done and we really need to be organise in the way we start and finish our games. We could have done better but the lads let it slip in the first match’. He also said when asked about the depth of his current squad, ‘We’re missing key players such as our team captain Sylvester M. and Libero Adam who is sick and again it was a bit worrying to see hitters Festus N. and Akram M. picking up injuries during this fixture. I’m glad we had Kamal B. coming back from an injury and doing his best for the team and our new signing Sam S. also contributing to the team’.

With 4points taken from this fixture, URBOND VC moves up to 6th on the current league table. URBOND’s next fixture will be a home fixture on January 28th, 2018 at the Priory Community Sports Centre, Portsmouth from 11am.
