A victory and a defeat in 1st triangular game for URBOND VC Men’s

Sunday 22nd October saw URBOND VC Men’s Team played its first ever national volleyball league games. The triangular fixture was held at Dartford Technology Sports Centre and the opponents were Richmond VC and Dartford VC Men.

Match 2 of the day was Richmond VC against URBOND VC. Richmond VC having already dispatched the host, Dartford VC 3 – 1 in Match 1 was off to a winning start as they won the first set 25-19.

With impressive plays from middle players Akram and Wens, URBOND fought back to win the second set 21-25 taking the score to a set each.The third set saw a better and organised Richmond side defending deep at the back and picking up most of the explosive attacks from URBOND’s hitters Adamatios, Festus and Hans and thus leading to a 25-20 win for Richmond.

With 2 sets down already, Coach Wens made a tactical change bring Hans into the middle and playing Akram opposite to try and stop the attacks through the middle from Richmond. With a slow start to the set, setter, Samir put up some good serves and dictated play to close the massive point gap that had been created. The fight back was in vain as URBOND lost the set 25-23 leading to a 3 – 1 defeat in the match to the current league leader Richmond VC. MVP for URBOND for Match 1 was setter Samir.

URBOND VC Men’s Team unveil their new kit for the 2017/2018 Volleyball Season. The event took place on Saturday, October 21st, 2017 at the Charles Dickens Centre Portsmouth and was attended by members of the community as well as the team’s sponsors, Richmond Motor Group.

Club Chairman, Ousmane Drame said, “It’s another big event for the club and shows we’re achieving our targets. I want to thank our sponsors, Richmond Motor Group for the support they’ve given our association and club this season”.

The Group Marketing Manager for Richmond Motor Group, Sam said, "We get a lots of sponsorship request but rarely much involvement but we see URBOND will be different.”

The URBOND VC Men’s Team players later thrilled the audience with an exhibition match. The team plays its first game in the new season on Sunday, October 22nd away at Dartford against Richmond VC 2 and host Dartford VC.

Men's team continue preparations ahead of their first league match

Despite the loss against Division 2 side, New Forest VC, Urbond's Mens team wasted no time in preparing for their next opponents in the upcoming league fixtures.
The team players regrouped on Tuesday evening at the Charles Dickens Centre to step up training with lots of passing and attack drills being put in place by Head Coach Wens.

At the end of the session, Team Captain, Slywester MatuszewskI said, "It was a good game last Saturday, though we lost, we're moving on from it by working on the areas we didn't feel comfortable with in the game. With more practice, we should be ready for the first game".


URBOND Mens team knocked out of cup race

Volleyball fans on Saturday, September 16th at the south coast city of Portsmouth were thrilled with an exciting 1st Round Cup match between Urbond VC and New Forest VC in the Mens category at Priory Community Sports Centre. The result ended in a 3 sets to 2 sets defeat by the home team against an organised and experienced Division 2 side, New Forest VC side.

The 1st set saw both teams trading points with good hits from both teams leading to a 25 - 27 win for New Forest. With a 1st set defeat, the Urbond were more determined to win the next set. Player coach Wenceslas then introduced a new game plan with quick attacks in the 2nd set which saw hard hitters Festus Nfor and Nasim Karimi gaining points for the team leading to a 25 - 21 win for the home team. New Forest then bounced back with a 25 - 20 win in the 3rd set but the home team was not ready to give up yet as the 4th set saw setter Samir Belaiche combining with opposite hitter Hans Shongue and team captain Slywester Matuszewski to win the set 25 - 17.

At 2 sets all, it was a tie-break with the last set now being the decider. Coach Wencelas then introduced middle blocker Carlos Ngassa with a new game plan to play to attack the opponents from the middle. The start was slow and the home team ended up losing the set 8 - 15.

After the match, the New Forest coach and President James Kemp said." To be honest, I didn't expect such a tough match from a newly formed team. I'm really glad we got a victory and will say the home team has a very good team with very good hitters.I wish them well in the league and I'm sure they will sail through easily."

Urbond club Chairman Ousmane Drame was quit impressed with the team's performance and said," I'm very impressed with the players and I'm pleased we put up such a good performance against a Division 2 side. Other teams would panic and just lose 3 sets to 0, but the lads showed what we can do as a new club."

Coach Wencelas took lots of positives from the game especially as it was it's first competitive match and stressed more work needs to be done and hope the learning continues.
Urbond's first league game will be away in Dartford against Dartford VC Mens and later Richmond VC on October 22, 2017.


Men's team final preparation before cup match

The Men's team enters its final preparation before Saturday 16th September Cup Match against Division 2 side New Forest Volleyball Club.

Speaking on this, Coach Wens said, "The players are getting to know each other and the team has started to gel. I am confident we will put up a go show on Saturday".

Regarding the opponents the Team Secretary, Willard-Hans said," New Forest VC is a great club and they have a very good structure. The players are well organised and drilled for the sport.It will definitely be a good game to watch so everyone in the community is invited to come and watch the game.''

The cup match is on Saturday, September 16th at Priory Community Sports Centre, Portsmouth, PO4 0DL. Kick off is at 11am.


URBOND VC Mixed Team joint winners

The 2017 edition of the Roke Volleyball Tournament (Winchester) which was held on Sunday 3rd August,saw Urbond VC Mixed Team participating in its first ever outdoor games.

The team took part in the competitive category of the tournament and came out top of Group B were it won all its 4 matches against very experienced teams such as Gosport Jedi (Gosport) and Accies Comets (Southampton). Due to the poor weather conditions at the later part of the day, the finals did not take place, thus giving both Team Urbond and Stray Cats who were winners of both Group A and B, joint winners of this year’s tournament.

Team captain Anne Kamanzi, after collecting the team’s trophy said, “It was a great tournament and our team played very well throughout. I believe if the rain had not interrupted, we could have won beaten the Stray Cats team in the final. Overall, I’m happy with the team’s performance and our level of play.”

URBOND VC Mens team intensify pre-season training

With the National Volleyball League season still a long way from start, Urbond VC Men's Team,has intensify its pre-season training seasons to further improve the players match fitness.

Coach Wens said,"It would be a difficult first season for the club and we don't want fitness to be an issue for the players as they will have to travel and play 2 matches every match day throughout the season".


Urbond VC Mens kicks off pre-season training with outdoor fitness sessions

The National Volleyball League Men's team had their first pre-season training session at the Portsmouth Seafront. Not a massive turn out as some of the team members were away on holiday.

Asked about the team's prospect for the upcoming season, the Chairman of the club and Urbond C.I.C, Mr Ousmane Drame said, 'It is an exciting time for the club and I am really looking forward to the start and how it will impact the community'. He further stated, 'the volleyball club falls under part of the C.I.C objective to bring people from all works of life together'.

Urbond VC first game is a cup game against Division 2 side, New Forest VC. It will be a home game for the team and it will take place at Priory Community Sports Centre at 11am on Saturday 16th September 2017. Everyone is welcome to watch as entry is free.
