Bad day at the office for UVC Men’s
Sunday, November 19th saw UVC Men’s team making its third outing in the 2017/18 NVL Div. 3 campaign. The fixture was hosted by Richmond VC 2 (currently 1st on the league table) at Kingston, London and the other team in the fixture was Team Bristol VC (currently 3rd on the league table).
The first game of the day saw Richmond VC 2 convincingly thrashed Team Bristol VC 3 – 0 sets(25-17, 25-21, 25-15).
The 2nd game of the fixture saw Team Bristol VC against URBOND VC. A more determined Bristol side started the game well taking the 1st set 25-21. UVC not wanting to go home empty handed pressed on and won the second set 25-22. Team Bristol then switched their game plan to focus on defence in the middle to stop the powerful attacks and combinations from setter Samir B. and middle player Wens F. Bristol then won the 3rd and 4th sets, 25-15 and 25-20 respectively leading to a 3 – 1 defeat to UVC.
The 3rd fixture of the day saw host, Richmond VC 2 take on URBOND VC. The host team wasted no time in winning the 1st set 25-21. The tactical change made by Coach Wens for this fixture saw middle blocker Hans Shongue combining with now outside attacker Adamatios (who was Libero in previous game) to stop the attacks from the Richmond team and deliver unstoppable attacks which saw the side take the 2nd set 25 -21. Coach Bello of the Richmond side fearing his side might loss the next set, introduced his key player, setter Javier who made it very easy for his attackers to penetrate the blocks of UVC thereby winning the remaining 2 sets 25 -19 and 25 – 21 respectively.
A really bad day at the office for Coach Wen’s boys who left the fixture with just 2 points from potential 6 points. Despite both defeats, URBOND VC move up to 7th in the NVL table.
Speaking after the games, Coach Wens said, “The game plan was to introduce a Libero, so we could get the balls to the setter as specific position, so we could run our attacks but clearly, that didn’t work well as we haven’t practised playing with a libero for long. I had to change that during the second match, so we could play normal but again the results didn’t come our way. More work still to be done in training but I’m very proud of my players today and the fight they put in against 2 good opponents.”
Regarding the team’s performance, UVC MVP for both game Hans Shongue said, “We had to try new tactics as few players were injured and others still recovering from injuries, so it was a bit difficult for us to play smoothly.”
Ousmane Drame, UVC Chairman who was present at the games said, “I’m pleased with the team’s performance as I could see lots of improvement from our last outings. We managed to get 2 sets from both opponents who are amongst the top 3 teams of the league. I’m sure we will put up a very good show and pick up all the points in our next game, which is a first ever home game for our new club.”
URBOND VC next game will be a home fixture at Priory Community Sports Centre, Portsmouth against Wiltshire Mavericks VC and Cardiff Celts VC 2 on December 3rd 2017.
